Description: The Alluvial Aquifer is present throughout Elbert county as a widespread network along active stream and river channels. In many places it may include alluvial fan deposits of tributary drainages. Groundwater present in the Alluvial Aquifer is unconfined and directly connected to the surface water, which allows the aquifer to either receive water from or transmit water to the surface water. The geology feature classes of this report incorporate the results of mapping at different scales from many sources, spanning decades of work by multiple authors. Primary sources consist of recent 1:24,000 quadrangle geologic maps produced by the CGS National Cooperative STATEMAP program and the USGS 1:250,000 (1 degree x 2 degree) quadrangle series. No 1:100,000 (30’ X 60’) scale maps are available within the county. Data from older or smaller scale maps have been used to fill in where detailed mapping has not been available. This dataset uses the most recent nomenclature and ages as published in the public domain.See lineage section for geologic maps used in the creation of this feature class.See report for in-text citations. This feature class was created in 2019 in ArcGIS for Desktop Version 6.2 (Build 9200); Esri ArcGIS 10.6.1.9270.

Many people contributed to this project indirectly over the years. Development of the generalized geologic map builds on many hours of field mapping by CGS and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) geologists. In particular, the authors owe gratitude to Matt Morgan and Jon Thorson for their tireless detective efforts at the 1:24,000 quadrangle scale weaving the geologic history of the region. We would also like to recognize Matt Sares of the Colorado Division of Water Resources and his staff for their input with respect to the geology of the Denver basin.

Description: This geologic map was prepared as a part of a study of digital methods and techniques as applied to complex geologic maps. The geologic map was digitized from the original scribe sheets used to prepare the published Geologic Map of Colorado (Tweto 1979). Consequently the digital version is at 1:500,000 scale using the Lambert Conformal Conic map projection parameters of the state base map. Stable base contact prints of the scribe sheets were scanned on a Tektronix 4991 digital scanner. The scanner automatically converts the scanned image to an ASCII vector format. These vectors were transferred to a VAX minicomputer, where they were then loaded into ARC/INFO. Each vector and polygon was given attributes derived from the original 1979 geologic map.
Copyright Text: The author wishes to thank Richard Taylor for storing and protecting the original Geologic Map of Colorado scribe sheets and negatives, Margaret Clemensen for assistance in preparing the explanation sheet and Scott Hogan and Kirsten Findell for review of the digital map; all are with the USGS. The author wishes to thank Randy Phillips of the Colorado State Geologic Survey for creating the TWETO.SHD shadeset.
