Description: In 1973, Colorado House Bill 1529 directed the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) to complete a study of commercial mineral deposits to include sand, gravel, and quarry aggregate along the Colorado Front Range urban corridor. This study was completed in 1974 and the results were used to determine mineral resource areas to assist state and local governments in populous counties (over 65,000 people) with making planning decisions. The statute concerning areas and activities of state interest can be found in the Colorado Revised Statutes specifically, C.R.S. 24-65.1-101. Colorado statutes concerning mineral resources are included in C.R.S. 34-1-304 which are available at: http://www.lexisnexis.com/hottopics/Colorado/).
During the study, approximately 271 1:24,000 scale quadrangles were evaluated using photogeologic methods and available data within several counties including: Larimer, Weld, Boulder, Jefferson, Adams, Denver, Arapahoe, El Paso, and Pueblo. Douglas County was not included in the House Bill but was included in the study. The photogeologic maps were field checked during the fall and winter of 1973-1974. Maps and data prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for a Front Range Urban Corridor Study were also utilized in preparing 74 of the quadrangle maps (Schwochow and others, 1974). The results of the study were published in the following publication available on the CGS website (http://coloradogeologicalsurvey.org/):
• Schwochow, S.D., Shroba, R.R., and Wicklein, P.C., 1974, Sand, Gravel, and Quarry Aggregate Resources, Colorado Front Range Counties, Colorado Geological Survey, Denver, Colorado, Colorado Geological Survey Special Publication (SP) 5-A (43 pp., 3 Plates) and 5-B (420 pp.), http://coloradogeologicalsurvey.org/.
The study included three 1:250,000 scale regional maps included in the 5-A publication referenced above and detailed 1:75,000 scale maps included in the 5-B publication which were produced during the reduction of the original 1:24,000 scale field maps. Also, detailed 1:24,000 scale maps were distributed to the appropriate counties and cities within the project area. The maps provided were used by several Front Range counties to develop mineral extraction plans and for land use planning.
In 2000, the map data provided in the 1974 report were digitized and provided as GIS digital files by the Colorado Geological Survey in the following publication: Cappa, J.A., Sadlick J., Litke, D.W., McCormick, M.L. and Hiatt, C.S., 2000, Digital Version of the 197 Atlas 5-A, Colorado Geological Survey, Open File Report 00-09 (http://coloradogeologicalsurvey.org/). Additional GIS data files, similar to these, were also later published by the USGS (USGS, 2011). The 2000 CGS GIS files were provided in older versions of ESRI’s ArcGIS. Additionally, field names and codes used within the ArcGIS files were not descriptive making it difficult to determine the meaning of the field names and values. This project includes an update to the 2000 version of the GIS files associated with the digitization of the original 1974 study maps. These data files are included on an online ArcGIS interactive map available on the CGS website (http://coloradogeologicalsurvey.org/). This online resource also includes additional publically available layers associated with sand, gravel, and aggregate resources in Colorado. The following sections describe the updates to the 2000 original files as well as a description of each layer provided in the online ArcGIS interactive map.
